Grades K-6 Curriculum Overview
KINDERGARTEN… Physical Education focuses on skill development in body and spatial awareness, fundamental, creative, and rhythmic movement, basic manipulative skills, and educational gymnastics. By the end of kindergarten, students will:
• learn to move creatively using a variety of levels, directions, force, and speeds
• learn locomotor movements
• cooperate with others by taking turns and sharing equipment
• participate willingly in all activities
• understand basic safety rules
GRADE 1… Physical Education focuses on skill development in body and spatial awareness, fundamental, creative, and rhythmic movement, basic manipulative skills, educational gymnastics and physical fitness. By the end of first grade, students will:
• practice a variety of ways to move using different pathways, levels, speeds, force, and directions
• practice and improve basic skills such as throwing and catching
• create locomotor and non-locomotor patterns
• apply basic safety rules when performing in personal space, general space, and on equipment
• show respect for different abilities when observing classmates’ performance
• cooperate with others and accept each classmate as a contributing member of the group
GRADE 2… Physical Education focuses on skill development in body and spatial awareness, fundamental, creative, and rhythmic movement, basic manipulative skills, educational gymnastics and physical fitness. By the end of second grade, students will:
• apply skills while performing individual, partner, and group challenges
• demonstrate different pathways, levels, speeds, force, and directions
• create movement patterns
• practice and improve basic skills, such as throwing and catching with self, a partner, and in small groups
• begin to understand the value of exercise as it relates to a healthy lifestyle
• cooperate with others when solving movement tasks in partner and small groups
GRADE 3… Physical Education focuses on skill development in body and spatial awareness, fundamental, creative, and rhythmic movement, basic manipulative skills, educational gymnastics and physical fitness. By the end of third grade, students will:
• refine motor and manipulative skills for participation in modified sport activities, rhythmic movement, and
educational gymnastics
• apply knowledge of movement patterns to create movement routines
• identify the behaviors, attitudes, and basic fitness activities that contribute to a healthy lifestyle
• interact cooperatively with students of varying abilities in solving partner and group movement tasks
• introduced to the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment
GRADE 4… Physical Education focuses on mature movement, manipulative and problem solving skills, educational gymnastics, and physical fitness in a more dynamic environment. By the end of fourth grade, students will:
• participate successfully in a variety of modified sport movement and educational gymnastics activities
• relate common movement patterns to specific activities
• demonstrate knowledge of fitness concepts and their contribution to selecting personal fitness activities
• demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings
• value personal/group achievements and improvements
• develop personal skills that foster cooperation and sportsmanship in game play
• participate in the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment
GRADE 5… Physical Education focuses on mature movement, manipulative and problem solving skills, educational gymnastics, and physical fitness in a more dynamic environment. By the end of fifth grade, students will:
• refine basic skills to successfully participate in modified sport and educational gymnastics activities
• create and perform movement routines and/or original games
• assess individual fitness levels and develop fitness goals
• develop positive attitudes about physical activity and fitness
• demonstrate willingness to work with any peer in the class; and recognize similarities and appreciate differences
• make critical judgments individually, and as part of a group to solve a movement problems, respond to
performances and give constructive feedback to peers
• demonstrates safe behavior for self and toward others during physical activities
• participate in the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment
GRADE 6… Physical Education focuses on mature movement, manipulative and problem solving skills, educational gymnastics, and physical fitness in a more dynamic environment. By the end of sixth grade, students will:
• refine skills to successfully participate in modified sport and educational gymnastics activities
• create and perform movement routines and/or original games
• assess individual fitness levels and develop fitness goals
• demonstrate positive attitudes about physical activity and fitness
• demonstrate willingness to work with any peer in the class; and recognize similarities and appreciate
